Choosing and Using a Backpacking Tent
Guide
A backpacking tent is a shelter system, not simply a smaller campground tent. It should protect the occupants from expected wind and precipitation, manage condensation, keep insects out when needed, and divide into a fair patrol load.
This guide is reference material, not a substitute for trip-specific instructions, current weather information, land-management rules, permits, product directions, or guidance from the leaders responsible for an outing.
Start with conditions, not capacity
A label such as 'two-person' describes intended sleeping capacity, but usable room varies. Check floor length and width, wall shape, door arrangement, and vestibule space. Tall Scouts or bulky sleep systems may need more floor length. Two doors can make a shared tent easier to use without climbing over another person.

A tent provides only a small amount of warmth. The sleeping bag, pad, clothing, site, and weather plan provide most cold protection.
Weight that matters
Compare the complete carried weight: tent body, rainfly, poles, stakes, guylines, stuff sacks, footprint, and repair parts. For a shared tent, calculate weight per person and assign parts clearly. Keep the patrol together and make sure shelter parts can be found quickly.
Freestanding and trekking-pole shelters
A freestanding tent supports its basic shape with poles, but it still must be staked and guyed when wind is possible. A nonfreestanding or trekking-pole shelter can save weight, but pitch quality depends on stakes, ground conditions, pole height, and practice. Rocky platforms, sand, snow, or hard ground may require special anchors.
Weather protection and ventilation
- A full-coverage rainfly gives better wind-driven rain protection than a small roof fly.
- A bathtub-style floor raises waterproof fabric above wet ground.
- Vestibules protect boots and packs while keeping more living space open.
- Mesh and vents reduce condensation, but they cannot eliminate it. Keep wet gear away from sleeping bags and avoid touching the inner wall when possible.
- Guy-out points add stability. Carry the correct line and enough stakes for the planned terrain.
Pitch and care
- Practice at home in daylight, then practice again with the patrol.
- Choose durable, well-drained ground that is not in a drainage channel, dead-tree hazard zone, or exposed high point.
- Use a footprint only if useful; it should not extend beyond the tent floor, where it can collect rainwater.
- Stake the tent and tension the rainfly without overstretching the fabric.
- Dry the tent as soon as practical. At home, clean it gently and store it dry and loose rather than compressed.
Never cook in a tent or vestibule. Scouting America prohibits flames in tents, and an open or partly open shelter does not prevent fire or carbon monoxide danger.
Tent checkout
- Check all shelter parts, seams, zippers, poles, and waterproof coatings.
- Pitch the tent with the assigned Scouts and practice staking and guying it securely.
- Confirm all parts fit in assigned packs and anchors match the expected ground.
