Knots and Hitches
Knots
Knots are the foundation of pioneering. The goal is not simply to memorize a pattern. A Scout should be able to name a knot, choose it for the right job, tie it without step-by-step prompting, dress and set it neatly, inspect the finished form, explain an important limitation, and untie it when the job is done.
The knots in this article are general Scout and pioneering knots. Unless an activity is being conducted under an approved climbing, rescue, or life-safety system, do not treat these knots as instructions for climbing, rappelling, belaying, fall arrest, or technical rescue.
How to Practice Well
- Use rope large enough to see and handle comfortably.
- Use contrasting colors when two ropes are involved.
- Tie from a diagram or demonstration, then from spoken directions, then without help.
- Explain one good use and one important limitation for each knot.
- Practice from different body positions and, after the knot is understood, with light work gloves.
- Inspect deliberately mis-tied examples and explain what is wrong.
- Use each knot in a small practical task. Speed should come after accuracy.
Square Knot
Use: A binding knot for tying a bundle, finishing a bandage, or joining equal rope ends for light, noncritical work.
- Cross the right end over the left and pass it underneath.
- Cross the end now on the left over the end now on the right.
- Pass it underneath, dress the two matching bights, and pull evenly.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: Do not use it for a heavy load, a critical rope join, dissimilar ropes, or a pull that changes direction.
Two Half-Hitches
Use: Attaches a line to a pole, ring, grommet, or similar object.
- Pass the working end around the object.
- Make a half-hitch around the standing part.
- Continue in the same direction and make a second half-hitch, then slide both together and snug them.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: For better friction and control under strain, a roundturn with two half-hitches may be more appropriate.
Taut-Line Hitch
Use: Creates an adjustable loop for a tent or dining-fly guyline.
- Pass the working end around the stake or anchor point.
- Make two turns around the standing part inside the loop, working toward the stake.
- Make one additional half-hitch outside the loop in the same direction.
- Dress the turns and slide the hitch to adjust the line.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: Do not use the taut-line hitch to tension structural pioneering guylines unless an approved plan specifically calls for it.
Sheet Bend
Use: Joins two ropes, especially ropes of different diameters.
- Form a bight in the thicker or stiffer rope.
- Bring the working end of the second rope up through the bight.
- Pass it behind both legs of the bight, then tuck it under its own standing part.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: A stronger-looking variation does not make unknown or unsuitable rope safe for a structural load.
Bowline
Use: Forms a fixed loop at the end of a rope.
- Form a small loop in the standing part.
- Bring the working end up through the loop, behind the standing part, and back down through the loop.
- Dress the knot and make sure the collar sits neatly around the standing part.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: A basic bowline is not a substitute for a modern climbing harness or approved life-safety system.
Timber Hitch
Use: Attaches rope to a log for a controlled, steady pull and commonly starts a diagonal lashing.
- Pass the working end around the log and around the standing part.
- Turn the working end back around itself at least three times.
- Spread the turns and pull the standing part to tighten the hitch.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: The hitch normally holds while a steady pull is maintained. Keep people clear of a rolling or swinging log.
Clove Hitch
Use: Begins or ends many lashings and makes a temporary attachment to a pole.
- Take the working end around the pole.
- Cross over the first turn to form an X.
- Continue around the pole and tuck the working end under the crossing part of the X.
Check: The knot should be dressed neatly, the parts should match the expected finished form, and the tail should be long enough to remain secure.
Important limitation: A clove hitch can slip or roll when pulled from changing directions. Use it where the lashing or approved application supports it.
Additional Pioneering Knots and Systems
Clove Hitch on a Bight
Places a clove hitch in the middle of a long rope over the open end of a pole. Form two underhand loops in the same direction, place one behind the other, slip both over the pole, and pull the standing parts in opposite directions.
Roundturn with Two Half-Hitches
A useful attachment for a loaded line. The roundturn around the object provides friction and control while the two half-hitches secure the line around its standing part.
Rolling Hitch
Attaches a rope to a pole or another rope when the pull will mainly come from one direction. The doubled turns should be on the side facing the expected pull.
Butterfly Knot
Forms a fixed loop in the middle of a rope. It is useful in a rope tackle because the loop can accept pull from several directions and is often easier to untie after loading than many other midline loops.
Rope Tackle
Uses a fixed loop, commonly a butterfly knot, and a redirected hauling section to create simple mechanical advantage for approved tensioning tasks. Friction reduces the ideal advantage, but the system can still create much more tension than a person could apply directly.
Never wrap the hauling end around a hand or body, never stand in the line of pull, and never exceed the approved design. Increased mechanical advantage also increases the stored energy and consequences of a failure.
