This Chinese New Year, Scout Society performed 3 days of community service at ]]>Hsi Lai Temple]]>. Scouts helped make boxed lunches as well as working at the vegetarian buffet. The January 22nd day is mandatory for all Boy Scouts. Times for the days of January 22nd and 29th will be from 7:45 am to 5:00 pm. January 23rd will be from 7:45 am to 8:00 pm. Deadline for Advancement Updates

There were several educational booths as well as game booths where kids and parents could learn about what is needed to stay healthy and active. On September 11, 2001 America was in shock as terrorists launched an attack with highjacked airplanes. They deliberately crashed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, resulting in the loss of lives and much destruction. To honor those who were victimized and those who assisted in the recovery process, the ]]>City of Rosemead]]> created a 9/11 Memorial monument with a beam from the World Trade Tower. The monument was unvealed yesterday on September 11, 2010 during the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony. Regular Meetings

September 10th puts our meetings back on track as we take a step away from our summer schedule and into our regular one; this means it's back to Class A uniforms! As we start off our regular meetings again, you should be aware that our start and end times for the meeting have changed slightly. Meetings will now occur from ]]>5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.]]> In addition, the monthly dues of $5 will also be paid during the first meeting of the month. The Appointments page on SS Portal has been updated. Starting in September 2011, the Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review will be combined into one conference. If Scouts have already undergone a Scoutmaster Conference and is waiting for a Board of Review, you may schedule for the ;Board of Review Only slot. ]]>]]> Meeting appointment days are as followed: 1st and 2nd Saturdays of the month are Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review (scouts must contact 3 qualified individuals to act as board members). ]]>]]> Remember that there must be a meeting held on the Saturday if you want the appointment to be processed. Parents must be included in the Scoutmaster Conference and Board of Review. If the parent is unable to attend the meeting, the conference will automatically be canceled. This is a good opportunity for the parents to gauge their scout's level and learn more about the scout's strengths and weaknesses.

September is rapidly approaching and that means the first normal meeting is not far behind. As soon as September 10th hits our meetings are back on schedule. Logo Design Contest

We will be having a pizza party during this Saturday's meeting while we discuss the placing of each patrol. ]]>]]> Since we are shifting towards the Summer Schedule, Scouts will no longer have to wear their Class A uniforms. Instead, we will be wearing Class B uniforms, unless otherwise noted (i.e. ceremonies, events, Board of Review, Scoutmaster Conference, etc).

SS Portal has had a few changes. The Board of Review application form has been revised. Be sure to download the new version of the form! ]]>]]> There is also a new page that will replace the Scout Progress Report: Participation Level. With this document, scouts can keep track of their participation within the troop. This is needed when scheduling Scoutmaster Conferences and Board of Review. Each scout must have a historical participation level of 75% and a 3 month participation level of 80% in order to make an appointment.

Meeting This Week

It has been decided that it would be best if we had a meeting this Saturday, May 14th to better prepare for events that will be occuring in the month of May. Girl Scouts should turn in their registration forms by the end of the meeting. Boy Scouts will be discussing the bike trip/BBQ event as well as working on any rank advancement they wish to sign off. Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will practice their sign language. ]]>]]> A note for scouts who do not have a beret: please bring $15 to the meeting to purchase one. The Boy Scout Forms listing has been updated. Previously events/activities held outside the Scout Hut required the completion of the Boy Scout Tour Permit. However, as of June 1, 2011, the Tour Permit will no longer be accepted. National as well as the Boy Scout Council require a different form to be filled out, the ]]>Tour Planning Worksheet]]>. ]]>]]> It is recommended that scouts who will be planning an event in the near future to use the ]]>Tour Plan]]> instead of the Tour Permit. After completion, the Plan must be faxed to Irma Martinez at 626.351.9149 (be sure to confirm and get the Tour Plan number by calling Irma at 626.351.8815, ext 229). Please note that the Tour Plan must be faxed ]]>TWO WEEKS]]> prior to the event. If you have questions regarding this new form, please ask.

Overnight Camp

The Boy Scouts are having an overnight camp at the Hut tonight, March 26th, during the regular meeting time. All the gear needed for an overnight camp is needed today: backpacking pack, cooking gear, etc... There will be cooking so be sure to bring your stoves and water to cook with. Equipment Check at the Hut

The Dragon and Eagle patrols will be meeting at the Scout Hut today, March 6th, at 1:00 pm to check out equipment for the upcoming Pre-Camporee. All scouts must bring their full backpacking gear so they can be checked as well. PL's, make sure that your patrol members have all their gear and patches for their uniform. This Pre-Camporee will be treated like the real Camporee in April. If you do not have your backpacking backpack, I suggest you get one soon. You can't be part of a backpacking troop without a backpack!

Snow Trip Canceled

If you didn't get the memo at the meeting, the snow trip has been canceled. During the Parent Meeting, the parents decided that they weren't ready for the trip. So scouts, if you guys really want to make this trip happen, you have to work with your parents on this issue. No parents equals no ride to the mountains.

Fire Station Tour

During the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, scouts got together and had a tour of Fire Station 42 on Valley Blvd. Scouts learned about the different types of hoses and ladders fire fighters use on the job. Cato had the opportunity to try on a fire fighter's outfit and learned that the clothing is actually really heavy and warm. Unfortunately, the tour was cut short as the fire fighters were called away for an emergency. ]]>]]> ]]> ]]>"Scouts learn about the different compartments on the fire truck"]]>

Patrol Challenge

Patrol members, up for a challenge? Here's one for you. Starting every meeting, until the end of Camporee, each patrol will be competing against each other in skill tests. Members must work together with their patrol to earn the highest score of the meeting. Scores will be given and the losers? As one patrol has experienced already, you get to perform clean up duty at the end of the meeting.

Changes to the Board of Review

When Post Camporee comes (after May) and scouts would be allowed to hold a Board of Review again, you will find that a new change has occurred. In addition to oral questions regarding skills and their knowledge of the skills, Skill Testing will also be enacted. During the Board, scouts are now required to perform the skill that is asked of the board. To accommodate this change, Board of Review spots will now be limited to ]]>two]]> time slots.

A late fee may be charged if it is not received immediately. ]]>]]> The equipment fee of $20 must also be turned in this week. Remember, this money is used to buy equipment and supplies that you use on events and outings.
