Award/Parent Meeting

An Award/Parent Meeting has been scheduled for September 18. This is an award meeting to honor scouts who have worked hard to earn ranks and badges throughout the summer. As always, Parents ]]>must]]> attend in order for scouts to receive awards. In a way, it's similar to a "Welcome Back" meeting and snacks will be provided! The meeting will take place at the Scout Hut at 5:15 pm. Class A uniform is a MUST. ]]>]]> In addition to the award ceremony, a MANDATORY parent meeting will also be held to discuss changes that will be implemented into our Scout program. This is also a great opportunity for parents to get answers to their questions or ask questions regarding Scouting or Scout Society. There is much to discuss so please arrive promptly. ]]>]]> ]]>Parental attendance is essential!]]> If your parent is unable to attend this important meeting, Scouts must have an adult/guardian with them to represent their parent at this parent meeting.

A Day of Training

Ending with the Labor Day weekend, Scouts signed up their holiday for a course of American Red Cross CPR training. Scouts attended the class and took tests (both skill and written) to determine their knowledge of CPR basics. Those who showed up around 12:30 pm also got spaghetti for lunch. Hopefully, these Scouts now have a better idea of what they need to do when there is a need to perform CPR.

Etiquette Know How's

"Keep eye contact with the person that you are communicating with." That was one of the key etiquette rules that Scouts learned during the September 5th Etiquette Class. Today, Scout Society had a guest speaker who presented to the Scouts about a few etiquette rules that would better them in life. Etiquette and mannerism in today's society is still of great importance!

SS Portal Update

A new feature that we have added to SS Portal is a form named "Appointments." Prior to the creation of this form, Scouts had to send emails in order to schedule their Scoutmaster Conference or Board of Review. With the Appointments form, all Scouts have to do is fill out some information and submit the form. Depending on the availability of space, Scouts will be notified of their appointment. ]]>]]> Remember, Scoutmaster Conferences are held every month during the First Saturday while Board of Reviews are held on the Second Saturday (unless noted otherwise). Regular email requests will NO longer be accepted!

Painting Fun

Ada Ling held her Girl Scout Silver Award Project today at the Truth Chinese Alliance Church. Her project consisted of repainting the Fellowship Dining Hall. A big thank you to all the scouts who volunteered to help! Remember, everytime you participate, you get Participation Points towards your progress report.

Scouts Clean Up the Hut

Many thanks to all Scouts who showed up at the Clean Up on August 22nd. Closets were cleaned/organized and new shelves were installed by Mr. Wu. The brush and vegetation growing along the fence was also cleared away leaving things a lot cleaner than before. As a bonus, Scouts had a fun time chasing the 2 chickens that mysteriously showed up at the Hut. Thank you to all who showed up! We appreciate your effort in keeping the Hut as clean as possible.

Once again, Troop 511 has a new Eagle Scout: Stanley Lin. An Eagle Board of Review was held on August 19th for Stanley to see if he would take home the rank of Eagle Scout. At the end of the night, Stanley Lin has passed the Board and became an Eagle Scout. ]]>]]> Congratulations Stanley! Scout Society wishes you the best and we hope you will always remember to follow the Scout Law, Oath, Motto and Slogan in life. Don't forget, although you're finished with your Eagle, there's still the Silver Award of Venturing. Mandatory Clean Up Day

We will have a mandatory clean up day at the Scout Hut on August 22nd beginning at 2:00 pm. Please come in clothes you would not mind getting dirty in. ]]>]]> If you have any empty containers, such as cookie tins or jars with lids, please bring them to the clean up. We will use them to store food and other supplies that could be found in the closet pantry. PL's, please inform all the members of your patrol.

Back From CCV

After a week of work and fun on Catalina Island, Troop 511 has returned back to the mainland safely. Scouts were able to complete requirements for merit badges and ranks while enjoying the various fun activites offered on the island. From kayaking to snorkeling, scouts also had the opportunity to shoot arrows and fire off some .22 rifles. ]]>]]> Several scouts were able to achieve the BSA Mile Swim Award, a very great accomplishment! Mr. Poon was able to renew his Lifeguard status and Kevin Shih was honored with the Dime Club (all shots fired from the .22 rifle fits under the cover of a dime). Be sure to check out the pictures when they are posted. You'll see all the fun activities and hard work these scouts put in throughout the whole week.

Cooking and Permission Papers (3)

August 7th is coming up and that's the meeting where we will once again cook and turn in permission papers. So be sure to bring your MESS KIT so you could eat. As a friendly reminder of what events are coming up, here's a list: ]]>]]> 1) The mandatory Etiquette Class (held on 9/5) requires a $10 fee as well as a permission paper. ]]> 2) Another mandandatory class, the Are You PREPARED? First Aid class (held on 9/6) requires a cost as well as a permission paper. Please check the flyer to see which First Aid class will fit you best (be sure to indicate it on your envelope when you turn things in). ]]> 3) Ada's Girl Scout Silver Project (held on 9/4) at the Truth Chinese Alliance Church will require a permission paper as well (turned in to Ada, of course). ]]>]]> ]]>But first things first, for all those going to CCV, see you all on August 6th's Packing Meeting at 6:30 pm.]]> Bring all your gear!

Packing Meeting

To better prepare for Camp Cherry Valley, our regularly scheduled PLC Meeting is now a packing meeting. Scouts, especially 1st time CCV goers, are encouraged to bring their pack and gear to the Scout Hut on August 6th at 6:30 pm. The experienced scouts will help go over the gear and make sure the scouts have everything they need for the week long trip.

Troop 511 has a new Eagle Scout and his name is Raymond Chung. Last night (July 29), the Eagle Board met to determine whether or not Raymond qualified to become an Eagle Scout. Got Containers? We're Getting the Scout Hut Clean

Scout Society is planning to have a clean up day on August 22nd. And of course...it's MANDATORY! More information about this event will come soon. ]]>]]> One thing that you could do in the meantime is to raid your house to find empty containers with lids. ]]>Yup, we need large containers: metal, plastic, glass.]]> If you have any of these said containers (say...snack containers or cookie tins), please bring them down to the Scout Hut. We will use them to store food and supplies that we will use for our campouts. Happy hunting and much thanks for your help!

Moving Up

During the Webelos Graduation campout, Webelos Scout, Preston Ling, moved up and graduated from Cub Scouts; the Boy Scout troop now has a new member. Along with this graduation, Preston advanced to Boy Scouts with the Arrow of Light honor. Congratulations Preston, you're that much closer to attaining the rank of Eagle. And congrats to the scouts who also earned badges and advanced in ranks. Keep up the good work!

We will be located at Taco Bell's parking lot, 9403 Valley Blvd Rosemead, CA 91770. Please tell your family and friends so they could support our fundraiser. ]]>]]> Scout Parents, if you are available to be a staff member, please sign up with Ms. Ng and volunteer your time to help sell fireworks. We know you are busy, but we have a lot of time schedules open so parents can help out in any way possible. Switching to the Summer Schedule

With summer coming, Scout Society will be switching over to the Summer Schedule. All scouts will be allowed to wear their Class B uniform instead of their Class A. However, scouts who need to undergo a Board of Review or Scoutmaster Conference must follow the regular rules. Scouts must appear in their complete military pressed Class A Uniform with all the required documents. ]]> ]]> Scout Society will also be having fewer meetings. For the month of June, there will not be a meeting on June 12th. So keep an eye out for the calendar, emails, website, and this RSS Feed. It'll keep you informed and you'll know whether or not there will be a meeting that week.

Summer BBQ Update!

Girl Scouts Re-Registration Fee

Memorial Day Celebration

Scouts participated in the City of Rosemead's Memorial Day celebration held at City Hall on May 31, 2010. With Brandon Liauw as caller, Troop 511 and Troop 512 performed the opening and closing flag ceremony. Thank you to everyone who participated in this event and a big thank you to all the troops who served our country!

The first semester for 2010 has ended. SS Portal's grade book will now start fresh with all scouts having the same score. Winner of the first semester was Kevin Chu (KC) with a score of 91.07%. Congratulations KC! As decided in the meetings regarding the Progress Reports, KC will be awarded with a free event. ]]> ]]> Want to win a free event like KC? Show your commitment to Scout Society by participating in events and working hard on your scout skills. Perhaps you will be the next winner. *Please note that scouts may qualify for a free event only once per 2 semesters. On Thursday, May 13th, Janice Lai attended the Girl Scout of Greater Los Angeles' Silver Award Ceremony. This event honors girls from the Greater Los Angeles chapter who earned their Silver Award. The Silver Award is the second highest award that Girl Scouts could earn. For her project, Sew for Love, Janice assisted the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society by sewing together beds for the cats who lived there. Congratulations Janice!

The City of Rosemead will hold it's annual Memorial Day Celebration on May 31, 2010 at City Hall (8838 East Valley Boulevard, Rosemead CA 91770). Scouts selected to perform the opening flag ceremony must have their military pressed Class A uniform with white gloves and beret. The ceremony will start around 9:00 am, so please show up a bit early for practice.

Eagle Project at Maryvale

Don't forget that tomorrow (4/24) is Brandon's Eagle Project. It will be held at the Marvale Orphanage (7600 Graves Ave. Rosemead CA 91770) at 8:00 am. There will be painting involved, so wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty. Permission papers must be turned in if you want to participate in the project. If you have not done so, Brandon will allow last minute papers to be turned in at the beginning of the project. Food and drinks will be provided!

Hoegee's Trail Backpacking Hike Experience...and Rescue?

Saturday's backpacking hike went fairly well. Scouts new to the experience of backpacking were able to get the feel of how a backpacking trip would be. Everything goes into their pack; food, water, ten essentials, sleeping gear, etc... Now that they know how it's like, scouts should look forward to a real backpacking trip that will be coming soon. ]]> ]]> Special props goes to ]]>Jason Kong]]> for truly being a scout who helps those in need. On the way back from the Hoegee's campground, Jason saw a group of hikers and dogs who were in need of assistance. Their dog suddenly became frightened and had stumbled off the trail, falling down the mountain side and getting caught in the bushes. Jason dropped his pack and lent a hand to pull the dog to safety by carefully lowering himself and reaching over the side of the mountain. A super job well done for your heroic rescue, Jason!

This weekend was packed with scout events. Saturday, March 20th, was the Mission Amigos Camporee. Scouts wents from booth to booth participating in events (what fun...). Rainy Camporee

Although it was a rainy event on Saturday, March 6th, scouts braved the weather and participated in Scout Society's 2nd Annual Camporee. Scouts were tested on their skill through written tests and hands on events. But with the heavy downpour, hail, and chilly wind, younger scouts left camp after dinner. The older scouts stayed for a PLC meeting reflecting and planning events. All in all, a wet yet entertaining campout.

Chinese New Year Fun

2 fun events commemorating Chinese New Year were held over the weekend. Scout Society had its annual Chinese New Year at the Garvey Community Center on February 20, 2010. There were games, a court of honor, as well as raffles. February 21, 2010 was the Chinese New Year Hike to Sturtevant Falls. Although it was a bit rainy in the beginning, it was nice and gloomy for the hike up and down the mountain.

The basketball tournament, Roundball Bash, held today on January 10th was a great game. Scouts got into teams and competed against each other to show off their skills in basketball. A basketball tournament is coming up on January 10, 2010 at Rosemead Park. Be sure to turn in your permission papers if you want to play. Last day to do so will be the meeting of January 9, 2010.

X Mas Celebration

Scout Society had its annual Christmas Party at the Garvey Community Center on December 20, 2009. It was a celebration planned by the Girl Scouts of Troop 512. Participants and guests of this party enjoyed games such as Present Pass and Musical Chairs. Unfortunatley, the party ran a bit late because the turkey was not ready for dinner. Overall, a great and fun time and many thanks goes to Mr. Javier Wu, Mr. Perry Poon, and the kitchen staff who cooked a very delicious turkey dinner.

REI Fundraiser

Class B Uniform for 12/19 Meeting

Because we will be having a Christmas Party on the 20th of December, there is no need to wear your Class A uniform tomorrow (12/19/09). Please wear your Class B uniform instead. Be sure to have your Class A uniform washed and military pressed for the Christmas Party!

The holidays are coming and Scout Society will be having its gift wrapping fundraiser again. Same place as last time, REI Arcadia: 214 N. Santa Anita Ave Arcadia, CA 91006. We will be gift wrapping customer's gifts from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm during December 21 to 24. Times may vary, depending on the situations. Please ask your parents to sign up with Ms. Ng during these next two meetings.

Yes, we moved the time up so we can take advantage of what little daylight we get. No need for uniform since it isn't much of a meeting, but I recommend you to wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. We all know how "clean" the Scout Hut is...
